Arthur's hillside site

about the design

An owner of one of the highest residential hillside sites adjacent to the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, comissioned us to imagine a home on this special speculative property.

  • Welcoming, parking, living, and primary social spaces are linearly arranged as an upper level.
  • The lower level, accessed by stair or elevator, is reserved for guest suites and the master suite (with sleeping, bathing, and grade level access to secluded outdoor pool swimming).
  • The spaces within are wrapped with flanking sweeping curves, with intent to capture panoramic mountain top views across the town of Paradise Valley and south toward Camelback Mountain.
  • Locally gathered stone and Arizona copper are proposed exterior materials.
  • The indigenous Phoenix Talus Snails (with their tiny shells abundantly scattered across the sloping site), inspire spiraling house features, like walk-in showers in each sleeping space and a winding stair into the master suite.
  • Phoenix resident and internatonally recognized artist Mayme Kratz was recommended to work with these snail shells  for counter top surfaces, lighting, doors, and art.
  • Respected Arizona Sculptor, Gary Slater, was proposed for special spiraling metal commissions including the automated entry gate at the base of the mountainside driveway.
